I am super excited that my photography is featuring in the summer exhibition "In The Midnight Hour" at the New House Art Space. New House Art Space is an amazing venue and creative community in Guildford, and I was lucky enough to attend another opening night there back in March - with a flashmob, but that's another story!
The venue has an incredible history of it's own - the building was earmarked for demolition, but back in late 2021 the team behind The Boileroom Music and Art Studios took it on. During the next few months the building was refurbished to accommodate 20 artist studios as well as a new foyer, reception, gallery for rent, and art exhibition/creative workshop space. Their ethos is to create an inspiring & inclusive space for all to be creative and grow their artistic disciplines and businesses. They also have an onsite coffee shop and a dog, so what's not to love?!
According to the exhibition's curators, "In The Midnight Hour" is inspired by the soulful song by Wilson Pickett:
"In the midnight hour, when all is silent, the truth reveals itself…"
The exhibition draws inspiration from the renowned RA Summer Show and will launch on the 16th of August with an opening reception that promises to be an unforgettable evening of art and community. The exhibition will feature original works from artists from all backgrounds, reflecting society and celebrating the creativity and diversity of our artistic community. "In The Midnight Hour" aims to create a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming environment where everyone can experience the transformative power of art, as well as an inspiring exhibition that will resonate with all who attend.
My contribution is "A Different Light", a photography triptych showing how familiar objects can be twisted depending on how we view them. After years working with lighting in the theatre industry, I've carried this interest over into the creation of still imagery and I'm enjoying the chance to experiment with a different medium. "A Different Light" features ordinary items from the natural world, distorted and made strange by the light they appear in.
